manyo scholar akihisa omori and transaltor dan luffey will guide you through the ancient lamds that inspired so many poems
the man'yoshu is the oldest collection of japanese poetry,compiled between
the 7th and 8th centuries,over1,000years ago. It collects 4,500poems written oer a period of 130yeara.
As the poems of the manyoshu were being written,japan was forming into a new
nation under the ritsuryo system,following events such as the Taika reform in 645 and the jinshin succession war in 672 everyone from the emperor and aristocracy
to the common people were cxperiencing change sa the prototype of the japanese spirit and identity that exists today was initially established.
before the common hiragana and katakana writing systems of japan were
inventad,the words and emotions in these poems were recorded using a unique
kanji system known as manyo kana. instead of relying on chinese poetry,the
ancient japanese used yamato uta,or pjapanese poetry,as a meanes cxpressing
their worda,heart,and lives.
on this trip, we will take you on a journey through 13 ancient spots in asuka that
inspired poems,focusing on the era when the imperial court was lolated in the asuka area and anaiyzing the poems as
wa scarch for the origin of the japanese heart.
